An old engraving of Geoffrey Chaucer (c. 1340s –1400). He was a poet and author, widely considered the greatest English writer of the middle ages and is best known for ‘The Canterbury Tales’. He was the first writer to be buried in what has since come to be called Poets' Corner in Westminster Abbey. Chaucer was also a philosopher and astronomer. He had a career in the civil service as a diplomat and was a member of parliament. He famously wrote in ‘Middle English’ at a time when the dominant written languages in the country were still French and Latin.
