Sub-stations located at Saw Mill, Kent and Grant Streets, , 19 and miles from Tacoma, respectively, will serve asdistributing points for the current supply. Current will probably be generated in the new Post Street power station of the SeattleElectric Company in Seattle, transmitted about one mile over a0000 B. & S. two-phase circuit at 2,200 volts o the Massachu-setts Street step-up transformer station. Here four 500-kw water-cooled General Electric transformers will raise the voltage toabout 27,500 maximum and feed the high-tension transmissionline with 60-cycle, 3-phase current over three No. 1 B. & S. cop-per wires as far as Race Track, where the line will change tothree No. 4 B. & S. copper wires and be carried through to Saw-mill substation in this size. The step-up transformers in theMassachusetts Street sub-station are to be equipped with regu-. StrctlRu. Journal MAP OF SEATTLE-TACOMA LINE lating dials giving various secondary voltages with variations inthe primary between 2,000 and 2,200. Each transformer is guar-anteed to regulate within 1 per cent at 100 per cent power factor, and within 3 per cent at 80 per cent power factor. At each of the sub-stations there will be one 300-kw motor-gen-erator set, fed by two 180-kw oil-cooled, step-down three-phasetwo-phase transformers. The machines consist of an eight-pole,300-kw, 450-r. p. m., 600-volt flat-characteristic, direct-currentGeneral Electric railway generator direct-connected to a G. , 450-hp, 2,200 volt, 2-phase induction motor. Each ma-chine has a 50 per cent overload capacity for two hours. It isexpected that the control of the railway current through motorgenerators instead of rotary converters will give an unusual flexi-bility in operation. Supplementing the motor generators and taking up the fluctua-tions which the trains will superimpose
