Lang Khai Dinh - Hue, Vietnam

Stairs to the main building (mausoleum) of the tomb complex. Lang Khai Dinh (Lang Ung) is the tomb of emperor Khai Dinh (ruled from 1916 to 1925). It is the last / most recent example for an emperors tomb at Hue. It is in many ways different compared to the other tomb complexes. Influenced by a journey to Europe (France) of Khai Dinh in 1922 the style and architecture of this tomb is a mixture of western and vietnamese (asian) elements. Khai Dinh also opted for a dark grey coloured concrete as the main material for his grave. Lang Khai Dinh lacks of the beautiful gardens and pavilions, which are typical for the graves of the earlier rulers of the Nguyen dynasty. All in all the tomb looks strange and in a way inharmonious. Although it can be seen as an early example for the tranformation of Vietnam into a modern country.
