The terms governess and companion / nanny were interchangeable, though much depended on their social skills or job specifications .Though sometimes considered part of the family, others were confined to their own room & suffered loneliness due to the rules of their employment. In larger households where they were largely resented and rejected by other servants. They were in essence a servant, though some sought to elevate their own positions due to their own social class and background which was often way above that of other servants.
