It was reckoned that over 900,000 prisoners had beentaken in Galilee and Judaea, and that over a million had 432 THE CATASTEOPHE been killed in Jerusalem and elsewhere but theirs hadbeen the happier fate. There was no prophet-poet Arch of Titus. to see Rachel, descended from the heavens, or come upfrom the grave, weeping for her children on the bare THE FALL OF JERUSALEM 433 hills of Benjamin, for their fair city had perished fromthe earth, and her land was silent and desolate ; her sonsslain or led off to shameful slavery, or to make sport inheathen amphitheatres, by mortal combat with each otheror with wild beasts; her daughters delivered over todisgrace at the hands of the soldiery, or from the stepsof the slave market. They had put away from them thethings of their peace which Jesus had offered them, andHis blood had only too truly come back on those whohad pierced Him, and on their children. The temple of Peace, built by Vespasian, and made thetreasure-house of the spoils of the Temple, was burneddown little more than a century later, under Commodus,but it is maintained that these priceless relics were savedfrom the conflagration.
