Rotorua in the North Island of New Zealand is a centre of geothermal activity. It has also been a traditional home of the Maori people for centuries. There are a number of cultural centres where visitors can see aspects of Maori culture. This picture is of a Maori warrior offering a traditional challenge to visitors to his village. Showing the tongue was designed to frighten and intimidate the visitor. The pendant around his neck is made of native greenstone or jade.
