There are about 30 water-tight doors and are located between the coal bunkers and fire-rooms and water-tight compartments below the pro-tective deck and are operated by motors of a specialtype and design rated at I h. p. each. The chain ammunition hoist motors number about34. They were specially built by the Union IronWorks. The chain hoists are used for raising ammu-nition from the ammunition handling rooms and pas-sages to the gun decks
