GRINDING DRY PIPE JOINTS. A machine for grinding the joints between the dry pipe andT-head is shown in the accompanying illustration. This consists of a framework made of plate and angles, whichis mounted on a pivot secured to the small stand resting on thefloor. A rod connects an armfrom the frame to a crank connection on a short shaft in abrackets secured near by, that is dr/vcn by a small air motor. The pivot supporting the oscillating frame can be raised andlowered a distance of a couple of inches by means of a smallair cylinder located beneath it. In operation, after the pipe hasbeen clamped in place and the T-head secured in the frameworkthe oil and emery are placed on the joint and air is admitted tothe small cylinder below which lifts the frame until practicallythe whole weight of the dry pipe is supported. The air motor isthen started and the lower part oscillated at a fairly rapid rateand through a wide arc. Whenever it is necessary to renew thegrinder the air is released from the lifting cylinder and the jointseparated. A similar arrangement has been designed for grinding the drypipe in the front tube
