Children with surfboards creep up on unprepared penguin, Boulders Beach, near Cape Town , Western Cape, South Africa.

The African (used be known as the Jackass) Penguin is the only one to inhabit the African continent and inshore islands. Since 1983, numbers at Boulder Beach in Simon's Town (on False Bay just outside Cape Town) have risen dramatically to over 2000 (1997). Despite being fenced within a reserve, penguins freely waddle and swim into un-quarentined areas of Boulder Beach which give people the unique opportunity to get close to and even swim and bathe with penguins.
