Thomas Young, English physicist and Egyptologist. By deciphering the Rosetta Stone, Young (1773-1829) made possible the translation of Egyptian hieroglyphs. In physics he performed experiments which led him to the conclusion that light is made up of waves (undulatory (wave) theory of light). After a portrait by Sir Thomas Lawrence.
