The pump equipment comprises two centrifugal pumps, each driven by a 111 h. p. motor ami having a combinedcapacity of 700 gallons per minute. This pump is used only in case of acci-dent to or failure of the electrical equipment. The sewage, coming from the pumping station throughthe 10-inch pipe, goes directly into the septic tanks, whichare enclosed in a reinforced concrete building 53 x 54feet. There are six tanks in all, each 53x8 feet and lOyifeet deep, and these are connected into scries of threeeach, giving two complete tanks, each 159 feet long, 8 feet 554 MUNICIPAL JOURNAL Vol. XXXVII, No, PRIMARY CONTACT Tank in Rear. wide and 10 feet 6 inches deep. These two units areused alternately. The size of the tanks is such that the sewage passesthrough in ahout 12 hours, giving a velocity of + feet per second. A scum board, placed betweenthe second and third tanks, about 36 inches high, extendsdown into the sewage 52 inches. At the end of the third tank the efHuent passes over aweir 8 feet long. From here it goes through an under-ground pipe to the control house for the primary contactbeds. These beds, three in number, are each 64 x 76 feetand are filled with 13-2-inch broken stone to the depth ofiyi feet. The flow into these beds is regulated by anAnsonia automatic control. Eight hours is required forfilling and the tank is allowed to stand full for the samelength of time. Draining is accomplished in about onehour and the bed is then allowed to stand for the remain-der of the 24 hours. The same program is followed withthe secondary beds,
