The 1,800 Square Meter Museum dedicated to the Great Lisbon Earthquake of 1755 opened to the public in April 2022. The museum received an award for Historic Experience – Outstanding Achievement in 2022 and was named Europe’s Best Tourist Experience in 2023.

Lisbon was the fourth largest European city, the population at the time of the quake in 1775 was about 200,000 and conservative estimates put the death toll from the quake and Tsunami at 12,000 to 40,000. Of the 200 churches in and around Lisbon only 20 remained and only 15 percent of all homes remained intact.
