Photograph by David Coleman. The chapel at Pena Palace in Sintra, Portugal, is a historic and architecturally rich space that dates back to the 16th century. Originally part of the Hieronymite Monastery that occupied the site before the palace's construction, the chapel was preserved and enhanced by King Ferdinand II when he transformed the monastery into a royal residence. The chapel features a Gothic nave with pointed arches and a pattern of 16th-century monochrome tiles, providing a stark yet elegant backdrop. The apse and choir are distinguished by Manueline vaulted ribbed arches, a hallmark of Portuguese Renaissance architecture, completely lined with vibrant 17th-century polychrome tiles. An alabaster retable, crafted by the renowned sculptor Nicolau Chanterene in the 16th century, serves as a focal point in the chapel, reflecting the intricate artistry of the period. The chapel's blend of Gothic and Manueline elements, along with its rich historical significance, make it one of the key features of Pena Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Visitors to the palace can explore this sacred space as part of their journey through the royal residence, gaining insight into the religious and artistic heritage of Portugal.
