South Africa's most recently declared World Heritage site (declared July 2 2018), the Barberton Makhonjwa Mountains in Mpumalanga Province.

This area is Mpumalanga's first World Heritage site. It has rock formations estimated to be between and billion years old. It is a geological repository of information on ancient meteor strikes, fossilised beaches, the environment for early life and earth's surface conditions. According to UNESCO it represents the best-preserved succession of volcanic and sedimentary rock dating back billions of years.
