Kinorhynch. Coloured scanning electron micrograph showing Antigomonas species, a member of the phylum Kinorhyncha. Members of this phylum are marine beach dwellers, living amongst the grains of wet sand or in the surface layer of marine mud. They possess a chitinous cuticle divided into clearly defined segments called zonites, which bear movable spines. A kinorhynch burrows by anchoring the extended head with its spines (right) into the mud or spaces between the sand grains. The body is then drawn forward, and the process repeated. Most kinorhynchs feed on diatoms and they are dioecious, possessing either ovaries or testes. Magnification: x220 at 5x7cm size. x360 at 4x5ins
