When anucleate eggs which lacked the "mitochondrial layer" were fertilized they divided some 40 to 70 minutes later than whole eggs. In contrast, haploid fragments which contained the "mitochondrial layer" were only delayed from 5 to 10 minutes compared to whole cells and were not detectably delayed compared to uncentrifuged haploids from the same animal.
