St Germoe's Chair, a Medieval detached sedilia (stone seats for clergy) building in Germoe churchyard, Cornwall, England, UK, used for outdoor rites.
View ENE of St Germoe's Chair, a detached sedilia (stone seats for clergy) building in Germoe churchyard, Cornwall, England, UK. Thought to be an early C13th version in stone of the churchyard booths erected for outdoor rites & celebrations such as Palm Sunday. The stone bench & three-bay blind arcade may have provided seating for a priest, deacon & sub-deacon. It is possible that the building is a later Medieval (C15th) construction using earlier architectural features. The stone head at the apex of the front gable is C12th, the crowned head inside is C13th & thought to represent St Germoe, claimed as an Irish king who, with his St Breaca, landed in the Hayle estuary as part of an Irish missionary group.
