INTRODUCTION, Position and Description of the Observatory. 1. The Magnetical and Meteorological Observatory at Makerstoun, in Rox-burghshire, was erected by General Sir Thomas Makdougall Brisbane, Bart., inthe year 1841. The geographical co-ordinates are as follow :— Latitude, 55° 34 45 N.* Longitude, 0h 10m 35s W. of Height of the barometer cistern above mean water at Berwick, 213 feet.| 2. The Magnetical Observatory is situate nearly on the summit of a ridge, whichoccupies the left or northern bank of the Tweed, being 540 feet distant from, and80 feet above, that river. The Astronomical Observatory is upon the highest partof the ridge, 140 feet due west of the Magnetic Observatory. A fair horizon is seenfrom the Observatory hill, being bounded about 10 miles to the east by a slightly-swelling ground, which, to the east-south-east, seems to join the Cheviot Hills. Theview is bounded about a mile to south and south-west
