Road from Ali to Tsaparang
The Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR) or Xizang Autonomous Region, called Tibet or Xizang, is a province-level autonomous region of the People's Republic of China (PRC). It was created in 1965 on the basis of Tibet's incorporation by the PRC in 1951. Tibet is the second-largest province-level division of China by area, spanning over 1,200,000 square kilometres, after Xinjiang, and mostly due to its harsh and rugged terrain, is the least densely populated province of the PRC. The road was under construction -as many roads in West Tibet where the Chinese seem to have at last decided to upgrade the dirt tracks. A detour involved crossing a river. Our Landcruiser made it without a problem but a young Han couple from Beijing got stuck in the middle of the water with their 4WD. Amusingly, they had bought state of the art mounteneering gear, with North Face clothes and fashionable accessories, even a tow rope -but obviously they got the car wrong. We helped them out of the river, and I shot a picture of the scene to remember meeting by chance with this friendly unfortunate couple!
