The tower is carried bytwo 30-in. rolled-steel double-flanged wheels at each axle of one wheel of each pair is extended to take a bevelgear driven through shaft and gear connections by a motor justabove the portal. The gear shaft nearest the motor carries abrake wheel, with brake shoes pressed against the wheel bysprings and released by compressed air when the crane is to bemoved. The top of the tower carries a circular girder 18 ft. in diam-eter, on which are a rail and a rack circle. The cantilever issupported at four points on the rail by two 24-in. rolled steelwheels. It is rotated by a pinion on a vertical shaft extendingfrom the rack up to the motor in the machinery house directlyabove. A manually operated brake controls the rotation. Thetrolley, a steel frame supported by four 16-in. cast-steel w^heels,is designed for handling
