The three women, one of them elderly, wear typically elaborate late-19th century female attire, while the young man sits confidently wearing a tricorn hat, a military-style frock coat and leather thigh boots. The photograph was probably taken in about 1870. It comes from the collection of a family based in Kendal, the former county town of Westmorland and gateway to the English Lake District. Branches of the family were also prominent in Carlisle, to the north, and elsewhere in Cumbria, the county which replaced both Westmorland and Cumberland in 1974. In 2023, Cumbria County Council was abolished and all its functions were taken over by two new authorities, Westmorland and Furness and Cumberland.
