The first sketch of Die Meistersinger vonNiirnberg was composed immediately afterthe completion of the score of Tann-hauser, the tragedy to which it was to bethe satyr-play. Thus in point of firstconception the work preceded all the othersin Wagners second period, although itscreation was not resumed till 1861, inParis, after Lohengrin, Tristan andmuch of the Ring were composed.
