Powder Blue Surgeon Fish / Tang [Bandos Island Reef, Kaafu Atoll, Maldives, Asia] .

Acanthurus leucosternon is a tropical fish with the common names powder blue tang and Powderblue surgeonfish. The powder blue tang is light blue with yellow and white highlighted fins. Its face is a uniform black with a white outline. The fish doesn't undergo colour changes as it reaches maturity as some tangs, surgeonfish and unicornfish do. The species can grow to a maximum length of twenty-five centremeters. The powder blue tang, like most in the Acanthuridae family is omnivorus eating mostly benthic algae. Acanthurus leucosternon's natural distribution is in the Indian Ocean in clear reef settings, from Indonesia and Christmas Island westward to eastern Africa to the Andaman Sea. The tang is uncommonly harvested for anything other than the marine aquarium industry. It is a commonly sold fish that is moderately difficult to care for, although its popularity is easily exceeded by the Regal Blue tang and Yellow Tang. The powder blue tang is also used as the logo and trademark of Atos Origin, a global IT services provider. Acanthuridae ("thorn tail") is the family of surgeonfishes, tangs, and unicornfishes. The family includes about eighty species in six genera, all of which are marine fish living in tropical seas, usually in and around coral reefs. Many of the species are brightly coloured and extremely popular for aquaria. The distinctive characteristic of the family is a pair of spines, one on either side of the tail, which are dangerously sharp. Both the dorsal and anal fins are large, extending for most of the length of the body. The small mouths have a single row of teeth used for grazing on algae. Most species are small, ranging up to thirty centremeters, but the whitemargin unicornfish Naso annulatus can reach a meter in length. These fish can grow quickly in aquariums so it is advised to check the average growth size and suitability before adding to a marine aquarium.
