Strychnine tree nut. Light micrograph of a transverse section through a nut from a strychnine tree (Strychnos nux vomica). The thick-walled cells of the nut's endosperm have black lines traversing the cell walls of interconnected cells. These lines are tubes called plasmodesmata, which are generally found in primary pit fields, where the walls are thinner. The plasma membranes of adjacent cells pass through this channel and connect with one another. Each plasmodesma has a tube (desmotubule) containing protoplasm (cytosol) inside the plasma membranes, which enables substances to pass from one cell to another across intercellular bridges.
