Prominent among the great manufacturing and exporting firms of Eastern Canada is the widely-known Rhodes, Curry Company, Lim- ited, of Amherst, , whose operations have extended over a period of 38 years. Rhodes, Curry Company, Limited, was established in the year 1877. The late Mr. N. A. Rhodes, father of Mr. E. N. Rhodes, , Member for Cumberland, and Mr. N. Curry, now Senator, were its founders, establishing a woodworking business in Amherst, , in the summer of 1877. They continued to do a building and contract- ing business until the year 1893, when they absorbed the Harris Car Company of St. John, , and moved it to Amherst. The combined business was operated under the name of Rhodes, Curry & Company, both as a woodworking plant and car works. Subsequently, in the year 1909, this company was merged with the Canadian Car & Foundry, Limited, of Montreal, one of the largest concerns of its kind in the Dominion of Canada. ' The woodworking and contracting business is still managed un- der the name of Rhodes, Curry Company, Limited. The main plant is situated at Amherst, , the busy hub of the Maritime Provinces; the central location of which, with rail and water facilities at its doors, is extremely advantageous for the collection of raw material and dis- tribution of its products. In addition to the plant at Amherst, this company operates branches at Halifax, Sydney and New Glasgow, besides being owners and operators of saw mills at Athol, Wentworth, Londonderry, Mapleton and Antigonish.
