Chicago, Illinois, USA. Chicago's venerable Canal Street Railroad Bridge over the South Branch of the South Branch of the Chicago River has its span lowered to accommodate railroad traffic. The bridge was completed in 1915, built by Waddell and Harrington and at the time had the heaviest lift span in the country, The bridge is owned and operated by Amtrak and was originally owned by the Pennsylvania Railroad. The structure is a vertical lift bridge, and is the only bridge of its type on the Chicago River. The vertical lift allows boats to pass beneath the span when raised above track level. Amtrak is the national passenger rail service in the United States.
