Not only did Chicago florists suffer from hail recently, but Paducah, Ky., waa a victim, and here the damage reached $50,000, the florists being heavy losers. The storm occurred March 15, accompanied by a downpour of rain. Schmaus Bros, suffered the heaviest loss, the damage being estimated at $10,- 000; that is, to the greenhouses. The damage to the flowers is unknown, but it may reach an additional $5,000, it is said. Henry Schneidman stated that almost every pane of glass was broken, as some of the hailstones were as large aa hen's eggs. Neighbors rallied to his aid and loaned tarpaulins and other coverings to protect the plants. How- ever, if a cold spell hits Kentucky the entire stock will undoubtedly be ruined, as it will take several weeks before a sufficient amount of glass will be se- cured. The greenhouses owned by John Van Aart were also damaged considerably, but the estimate here is only $500. The greenhouse of G. R. Noble was practi- cally demolished. ST. LOUIS RETAILERS MEET. The St. Louis Retail Florists' Asso- ciation meeting, which took place March 15, was a lively and enthusiastic one. There were fifty per cent of the mem- bers present and some good discussions on the coming Easter business and the past St. Valentine's day trade were held. Among the various subjects in dis- cussion were delivery and overhead ex- pense. The plan of the association is to in- crease the membership to 100 per cent and each member is requested to bring a new member for the next meeting, which takes place the second Monday in April. All retail florists are requested to at- tend the next meeting and become mem- bers of this association. Fred C. Weber, Sec 'y. ttRKINHOUSKS-ALL KINDS.
