Lee at Appomattox. he was one of the leadersof the first movement in the south to re-establishpeaceful relations with the U. S. government, andpresided at a mass meeting at Staunton with thatobject on 8 May. 1865. He was elected i congressin the same year, but was excluded by the oathsthat were required. In December. S. militaryacademy after spending two years at Emoryand Henry college, was graduated in 1854, joined the regiment ofmounted riflementhat was then serv-ing in Texas, andtook a creditablepart in actionswith the ApacheIndians.
