View WSW of the interior of Castle Haven Iron Age galleried dun on the rocky foreshore at Kirkandrews, Galloway, Scotland, UK. The D-shaped dun has galleries within its double walls, upper levels are reached by stone slabs projecting from the inner wall face. The main entrance is at the NE with a second entrance at the SE leading down steps to a boat-landing. Six doorways lead from the inner court into the three narrow galleries. There were several periods of occupation dating from the C7thBC through to the Middle Ages: one traditions states it was used as a refuge in the C14th by Edward Balliol. At some point an outer enclosure was built around the dun. The site was cleared out & heavily restored/rebuilt in 1905 by James Brown the laird of Knockbrex.
