Old Charleston Jail Front

Jail was operational from 1802-1939 and housed Charleston's most infamous criminals. During the Civil War Federal and Confederate prisoners of war were incarcerated. Some notable personages held in the jail were Denmark Vesey, accused of planning a slave revolt and executed in 1822. Jacques Alexander Tardy held from 1825-27 for attempting to steal a pilot boat, and also responsible for innocent John Gibson being tried and hanged for his 1817 piracy
