Ancient Egyptian cat mummy, 664-332 BC, Louvre Museum inv mummy in a sheath of linen, stucco fabric, head covered with a mask of painted fabric. Height: 39 cm; Width: cm; Depth: cm. Sully room 322. Animal mummification was common in ancient Egypt. They mummified various animals some with religious significance like Bastet, the cat goddess, is an example of one such deity. Bastet was worshiped in Bubastis in Lower Egypt, originally as a lioness goddess, a role shared by other deities such as Sekhmet.
