Edward Hyde (1609-1674), 1st Earl of Clarendon, who wrote a famous history of the English Civil Wars, 'History of the Rebellion and Civil Wars in England’, the first detailed history and eyewitness account of the Civil War period. Square detail of an engraving by an unknown engraver, after a portrait by Sir Peter Lely (1618-1680), first published in the 1740 edition of Clarendon's 'History'. Edward Hyde was Chancellor of the Exchequer both to King Charles I and his son, Charles II. He served as Lord Chancellor from 1658 to 1667 and as Chancellor of Oxford University from 1660 to 1667. He was created 1st Earl of Clarendon in 1661, but was impeached by the House of Commons in 1667 for holding prisoners without trial. A successful Dutch raid on the River Medway in 1667 was the final blow to his reputation, forcing him to flee to France. Hyde never saw England again, but he spent his last years completing his 'History', the proceeds of which were to pay for the construction of the Clarendon Building in Oxford. Through his daughter Anne Hyde, Duchess of York, who was the first wife of James Duke of York, later King James II of England and VII of Scotland, Clarendon was grandfather to both Queen Mary II (1662-1694) and Queen Anne (1665-1714). Sir Peter Lely was a Dutch artist who came to London in the 1640s, established his reputation as a portraitist, and worked throughout the English Civil Wars and the Interregnum. At the Restoration of the monarchy in 1660, he was appointed Principal Painter to King Charles II.
