Birthwort, Snakeroot, Duckflower, Pipevine or Dutchmans Pipe, Aristolochia tricaudata. Central America, Mexico

Aristolochia tricaudata aka Birthwort, Snakeroot, Duckflower, Pipevine or Dutchmans Pipe. The eerie bat like flowers of aristolochias usually have a disgusting perfume which attracts carrion feeding insects that pollinate them. Aristolochia tricaudata from Mexico is used for cultivation as it lacks the offensive smell. Its blackish purple flowers have three appendages which can reach 10cm long giving them their name, tri-3 caudata-tailed. The species has been used for curing snakebite, malaria and impotence as well as inducing childbirth but is highly dangerous. Aristolochia means excellent childbirth. Medicinal plant toxic.
