'Lord Kitchener of Khartum', c1885, (1901). Portrait of Earl Kitchener of Khartoum, Irish-born British soldier and statesman. Herbert Kitchener (1850-1916) regained the Sudan for Egypt by his victory at the Battle of Omdurman (1898). He was commander of British forces during the Boer War (1899-1902) and served as War Minister from 1914 to 1916. His portrait was used on a famous World War I army recruitment poster. Kitchener drowned when HMS Hampshire, carrying him to Russia, was sunk by a German mine in the North Atlantic in 1916.
