The Observatory

The view taken in 1828, shows the Observatory erected by Claude Perrault under the auspices of Colbert. The astronomer Cassini of Bologna whose marble statue is in the hall was consulted in the design. It is close to the gardens of the Luxembourg between Rue de Faubourg and Rue d’Enfer. The meridional line is in the great hall for the calculation of longitude. There is a universal chart by Chazellas and Sedileau in the building. The Bureau des Longitudes meets at the Observatory. The image was drawn by J Nash under the direction of A Pugin and engraved by J C Kernott
