In Baumanns time they worepractically no clothes, and in remote villages this isthe case even at the present time. On the other handthey many of them wear plaited hats of an immensesize that serve the purpose of umbrellas. Their housesare very simple, and their furniture is of the mostprimitive description. They possess no iron implementsother than those introduced by Europeans. Tattooing is unknown among the Bubis, but bothmen and women display peculiar scars, which theyregard as adornments, -w-ide incisions across theircheeks from ear to nose.
