Lagarrigue designed and built the Gargamelle bubble chamber, which was installed at CERN (the European particle physics laboratory) near Geneva, Switzerland. In 1973 physicists working with Gargamelle observed neutral currents, an important step towards confirming electroweak unification. Lagarrigue was director of the linear accelerator laboratory (LAL), Orsay, France, from 1969 to his death in 1975.
