Gram-negative bacterium. Artwork of a prokaryotic, Gram-negative rod-shaped bacterium with a single polar flagellum (spiral structure, upper left). The nucleoid contains the genome (genetic material, pink). The flagellum is rotated to propel the bacterium forward. The projections are filaments called fimbriae, used to attach to surfaces. Longer fimbriae, called pili, are used for conjugation.
