The fragments of shell and bullets are all gathered by the Tartars; little bits of leather, such as morsels of belts and knapsack straps, are about the only remains to be seen on the walked down the Quarry Ravine. I knew what was under my feet. The bed of the ravine is one long continuous is as truly a "city of the dead"...The Inkerman monument has the following inscription: "In memory of the English, French, and Russians who fell in the Battle of Inkerman, 5th November, ; This is repeated in the Russian language and letters on another panel.
