It was one of the few well-trained national guard regiments that re-sponded to the call and was selected to accompany the first regular armyexpedition. It went to Cuba with the Army of Invasion under GeneralShaffer and was in the trenches facing Santiago when the Spaniards theresurrendered, the Illinois fighters holding the line between Roosevelts RoughRiders on the left and the First District of Columbia Volunteers on theright.
