The Wesleyan Superintendent Minister,probably the same who caused friction in Bolton, wasfrankly told by some who attended the Wesleyan Mission atLostock, that their politics were a part of their religion,and, if he did not like it, they could do their own preachingand praying. The crisis came when these men attendedthe famous gathering at Peterborq. They left themission and in 1S19 rented a cottage up The back othSquare. Here they opened a Sunday school where thethree Rs were taught and regular services Phillips often walked oyer from Warrington topreach for them. They were known as Quaker-Methodistsor Singing Quakers. The leading men in those early -(.0D. WESTHOUGHTON. 114 BOLTON DISTRICT. days were William Bradshaw, George Hodson, , William Kirkman, Joseph Adamson, JosephBateson, John Fell, Joseph Sale, William Ferrar, PaulMonks, William Rigby, E. Morris, Robert Bamber, and Joseph Hart. Five of them v/ere returnedas ministers 70 years ago. A new chapel was builtin the Square and opened in 1835 by Peter Phillips. Asa building it was a splendid monument of self-denial andmanual labour by devoted men and women, but the galleryhad been constructed flat instead of sloping. One of thebrethren on his own responsibility had the front of thegallery lowered. Discord set in ; the brethren had not beenconsulted, and the result was that for about three yearsthere were two Independent Methodist Chapels, butultimately a reconciliation took place.
