Garden drama: A Five-lined Skink, Eumeces fasciatus, predator attacking earthworm to eat, Midwest USA
Skinks are the most diverse group of lizards. The five-lined skink (Eumeces fasciatus) is one of the most common lizards in the eastern and one of the five species of lizards in Canada. Other common names include blue-tailed skink and red-headed skink. Skinks are generally carnivorous and largely eat insects, earthworms, snails, slugs, isopods, other lizards, and small rodents. It is one of only two lizards known to inhabit Michigan and eastern New York in the US. They are listed as an endangered species in Ontario by COSEWIC, and it is illegal to remove skinks from their habitats in Canada. These skinks are ground dwelling creatures that like moist environments and shady areas. Some species are sold as pets. Raccoons, foxes, possums, snakes, coatis, crows, cats, dogs, herons, hawks, and kookaburras all prey on skinks.
