Larnach Castle, nr. Dunedin on New Zealand's South Island claims to be the country's only castle. It was built 1871 for William Larnach.

Larnach Castle was built in 1871for William Lanarch,, a local merchant baron and politician. It took 200 workmen 3 years just to build the shell and a further 12 years to completeand embellish the interior. Much or this work was done by imported European craftsman. The castle is still privately owned by the Barher family. They bought the then ruined castle in 1967 and have set about restoring it. They have used many native materials and hard woods. The castle contains a large collection of period antiques and period furniture. The castle and gardens are open to the public and is a tourist attraction for those visiting Dunedin.
