Up against it in Nigeria . - i BAUCHI 37 woods Magazine, and I reproduce it in the formof an appendix (A) by the courtesy of the that article I did not give this gentlemancredit for half his subsequent achievements, oneof which landed him for good and all in LokojaGaol. Not quite for good and all, for whenI last passed through that station Beamish, whowas then in charge, informed me, if I rememberrightly, that he had escaped more than oncesince his incarceration. During one of these adventures it is reportedthat he was nabbed by a trader, and confinedin a tank, upon the lid of which the night watch-man was bid to sit in ceaseless vigil. Thisstratagem, however, presented no difficulty toSuli, who soon put his juju on the watchman, and escaped from his predicament. (Sulis jujuwas a quack nostrum consisting almost entirelyof one ingredient—namely, the sheer terror heinspired in all who crossed his path. Vide theepisode of the Police sergeant-major in AppendixA.) Beamish kindly gave me a photo of thiscel
