St John the Baptist's church beside the gatehouse to Stokesay Castle fortified manor house built by Lawrence of Ludlow in the late 13th century. Present timber-framed gate dates from c 1641. The house was surrendered to a Parliamentary force during the Civil War & the Norman parish church nearly demolished - it's tower & nave was rebuilt in 1654, the chancel in 1664.
