Smoke-powered turbine. Engraving of smoke from a fire rising up and powering a turbine in a chimney. The thermal energy of the smoke is being converted into the rotational mechanical energy of the spinning turbine. The turbine is connected, through a series of cogs, to a spit which is turning a bird that is cooking beside the fire. The bird is being cooked beside the fire rather than over it so that any fat dripping off it can be collected and used to make candles. Image taken from a 1662 book.
