The Nationalmuseum is the largest art museum in Sweden modelled after Florentine and Venetian Renaissance buildings The collections date to the 16th century based primarily on contributions by Carl Gustaf Tessin the Swedish ambassador to France in the 1740s and King Gustav III Originally called the Royal Museum when it was founded in 1792 the name was changed to Nationalmuseum when the present building was inaugurated in 1866
