Robin asked to be taken up into the highesttower of the palace, and there, looking leaguesand leagues away to Ogre Castle, he saw withhis Eagle sight the amulet, glowing like sun-light imprisoned in a ruby. The Ogre was turning it over and over inhis hand, muttering to himself, in the stupidway ogres always have: It must be a nut, forI can see something good inside. Robin couldnot hear him, but he was sure, by the help ofthe Owls wisdom, that it was the amulet. ^b. AT DAYBREAK ROBIN BLEW THE MIGHTY HORN. In a thrice—that means while you count three—Robin was speeding away with the Hares swift-ness toward Ogre Castle, and in a few minuteshe was demanding the amulet from the Ogre. Now usually the Ogre was not at all a dis-agreeable fellow, and the Owls wisdom wouldhave easily sufficed to enable Robin to secure theamulet without trouble, but he had just tried 636 ROBIN OF THE LOVING HEART fMAY, to crack the amulet with his teeth. It broke offthe very best tooth he had in his head, and hispoor jaws ached so that he was in a very badtemper. He turned fiercely, and for a few min-utes Robin needed all the strength the Lion hadgiven him. After all, the Ogre was one of the pneumatic-tire, hot-water-bag kinu of giants, who flat out
