German, Chicorie.—French, Ohicoree— Spanish, Achivoria a Cafe, Chicory is cultivated chiefly for its roots, which are dried, and used so a substitute or flavoring ingredient for coffee. The leaves, when blanched, are also esteemed as an excellent salad. Cultivate as recom- mended for Carrots. Rooted. Per pkt., 5 cts.; oz., 10 cts. \%Vo., 30 cts.; lb., $ WITIiOOF. Sow in June and transplant the roots in October in rows eight inches apart, in trenches one foot deep; cut off the leaves. Cover the roots with well sifted soil eight inches thick, adding a good layer of manure two to three feet thick. The Witloof will bo ready for use in about three weeks.
