May 22, 2018 - DeLand, Florida, United States - Carl Laurin, the author of the book, " Cooper & Me: A Criminal, a Spy, My Best Friend", which was released on May 17, 2018, poses with an advertisement for the book outside his home on May 22, 2018 in DeLand, Florida. The book chronicles the confessions of Laurin's longtime friend, Walter R. Reca, who, around 2008, related to Laurin that he committed the infamous 1971 hijacking of a Northwest Orient flight from Portland to Seattle. The hijacker, using the alias, "Dan Cooper", which evolved in the media to " Cooper", parachuted out of the plane with $200,000 in ransom and disappeared. Reca, a former military paratrooper and intelligence operative who died in 2014 at the age of 80, made his taped admissions to Laurin on the condition that Laurin not publicize them until after his death. The hijacking officially remains unsolved and the FBI closed their investigation in 2016. The FBI stated that they would not reopen the case without physical evidence relating to parachutes or money, evidence that Laurin, an 84-year-old pet boarder, was unable to provide.
